Speedmaster 1963

Back to Omega watches

June 3, 1965, Major Edward H. White makes an exit in the space, preceded by little by Soviet Alexis Léonov, March 18.

For this exit out of Gémini IV, NASA took many precautions.

The spacesuit of White only costs it 27000 dollars!

With the sleeve of its spacesuit, a 165 dollars Swiss watch :

Photographs in the press make the effect of a bomb at Omega  Bienne:

Indeed, one thinks of having recognized Speedmaster on the photographs of White !

Confirmation is given by NASA one year later, in April 1966.

The myth of Speedmaster is being born, Ref.ST 105.003 is the older sister of that which will become Moonwatch.

Of course, dial doesn't yet have inscription PROFESSIONAL.

Omega cannot register on the dial a term in connection with NASA.

To circumvent this prohibition skilfully, Omega will add the above mentioned word, which evokes Professionalism of the astronauts.

Velcro strap of the watch is removed thereafter: The watch is bent on the glove of the combination of the astronauts !

Steel logo is applied to the dial.

White graduations are very precise and support enlargement, contrary to the tritium indices , which show the weight of the years.

On the back, the sea horse, and the name of the watch are engraved slightly.

But let us see what mask the back...

Presence of a dustcap, which maintains the movement in place, when the back is screwed.
